3.1 C.S.P.E. Class Welcome S.E.R.T. to the Ard Scoil
As part of their C.S.P.E. project, 3.1 class recently invited members of S.E.R.T to come and speak to the class about their work. Muireann Walsh wrote this piece about their visit.
S.E.R.T. – South East Radiotherapy Trust – has provided vital transportation to cancer patients of Whitfield Clinic, Waterford and Cork University Hospitals and hopefully will continue to do so well into the future. Drivers of all ages volunteer their invaluable time to drive the 8 seater busses in rotation over 4/5 week period. This is the brainchild of Dr. Gordon Watson and has been operating successfully for 7 years now.
Ned Ryan, a volunteer driver, explained how he thoroughly enjoys driving the inspirational people on their road to recovery. He loves hearing new stories or catching up where he left off on other stories.
The co-ordinator for the Dungarvan area, Liz Walsh, informed us that the upkeep of the vans, the replacement of the vans after a 3/4 year period and the insurance expenses all add up and can be very costly. But even in these recessionary times, people generously donate money from table quizzes, dances and other forms of fundraising and this is what has kept this fantastic service running for so long.
The unnecessary worry about transportation is taken from the clients’ minds when they can avail of S.E.R.T. No matter which form of cancer the patient is battling, no matter which parish in the county they come from, no matter the time or date of the hospital treatment, S.E.R.T. is available to one and all. People are collected from their homes, brought to the appropriate clinic and return to their home on the same day. As well as having a hassle free journey, over time new friendships are made between people who were once strangers to each other.
We can safely say that S.E.R.T. cares for individual needs while providing a wonderful service for the community and takes the worry of transportation from clients’ minds.
