Celebrating Stand Up Awareness Week in Ard Scoil na nDéise.

Stand Up Awareness Week is an annual campaign run by BeLonG To Youth Services, which gives second-level schools the opportunity to celebrate and recognise their LGBTI+ community.

It is a time when we show solidarity with young people and our colleagues to ensure they feel seen, heard, and safe, and to ensure everyone knows that biphobic, homophobic, and transphobic language and bullying will not be tolerated.

Stand Up Awareness Week took place from November 15th-19th this year.

This week is an opportunity to take steps to make spaces safe and supportive for LGBTI+ young people. It is heart-breaking that one in five young LGBTI+ people face bullying and that 73% of young LGBTI+ students feel unsafe at school. Together we can create spaces where LGBTI+ young people feel safe, equal, and valued.

During the week the Student council held a poster competition for First and Second Year classes. Posters could be about anything to show our support to our LGBTI friends/classmates/school community and to highlight the fact that everyone should feel safe and valued in our school.

SPHE and Religion classes also focused on the topic during the week.

On Friday the school held a colour day where each year group and the staff wore a color of the rainbow.

It was an action packed week and we hope it highlighted the importance of solidarity within our school community.
