Transition Year

Transition Year

An optional one year programme that the vast majority of our students moving from Junior Cycle to Senior Cycle follow the programme.

Transition Year Programme

Transition Year aims to develop the student’s maturity. This is achieved by offering a wide and varied programme that allows students to acquire a broad range of skills, as well as continuing with academic subjects.

The Transition Year programme includes all the core academic subjects as well as Computers, Home Economics and Career Guidance. All students do modules of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and this assists them in their selection of subjects for the Leaving Certificate.

ECDL - Each year many Transition Year students complete all seven modules of ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) and acquire this valued certificate.

Enterprise Programme - allows students to develop business ideas and learn cooperation and teamwork skills.

Work Experience - gives students the chance to sample the world of work and assists with future career choice.

Parent Meetings

The Transition Year Information meeting for Third Year parents and their daughters is held in late January, and once application forms are received the process of interviewing begins.

At the end of the year we hold a Transition Year Graduation Night for students and their parents.

Modules

Modules vary from year to year but generally include:

  • First Aid
  • Music/Choir
  • Economics
  • Self Defence
  • Drama
  • Environmental Science
  • Forensics
  • Engineering
  • Typing
  • Video Production
  • Spanish
  • Writing for College

Communication skills are of vital importance to all students as they proceed through school and on to their future career. Students have time each week where they prepare and deliver speeches to their peers.

We run an integrated Art Project where students from Carriglea do Art in Ard Scoil na nDéise with Transition Year students. They hold an exhibition of their work at the end of the year.

Transition Year also involves trips to many different events. The students undertake outdoor pursuits including surfing in September and May.
